What is your favorite quote and why?

Querer es poder! It translates, where there is a will, there is a way. I heard it from my grandmother and my mother all the time and I learned that if you have the right motivation you will achieve your goal.

What are the most rewarding parts of your job?
It gives me great satisfaction to advocate for and see my immigrant students blossom and succeed in school. It is even more gratifying when years later, I get a call or I come across students and I have a chance to sit and listen to them in sharing their journey of success after Liberty High School Academy for Newcomers. It makes my day every time a former student returns to Liberty to register their teenage son or daughter requesting I be their child’s guidance counselor.

Looking back in time to 2002 when i first came to United States, i was an illegal immigrant. Ms. Garcia was my first counselor. She was always helpful and caring to her students. Personally, she helped me a lot with all the paperwork i needed to start college. She always strives the best for anyone that crosses her path. You can find a counselor in her, but most importantly you can find a friend. I do not know someone who can say otherwise. Last year we met again and it was so nice to talk about how we have succeeded in life. I am not the only responsible of my success, many people around me is part of it. Ms. Garcia is one of them. And for that i am thankful!

    1. Garcia

Yes, indeed Alejandra. I was very happy to see you all last year and I hope we can get together again soon. I know you will continue to succeed in the future and I want you to know that your resiliency at Liberty got you where you are today.

Having worked with Ms. Garcia for many years and knowing her both professionally and personally, I am honored to have nominated such a motivated and dedicated Guidance Counselor. Ms. Garcia has always gone above and beyond for all her students, many of which come back to share their success or enroll their children with her as their counselor. Her passion for her students is evident in all of her interactions and I truly hope that she will be rewarded for all her support, dedication and service throughout her career.

    1. Garcia

Dear Abigail, thanks again! Just want to say that, you were just as dedicated and committed to our immigrant students during your tenure at Liberty High School. You also have continued to collaborate and render support to a number of my students who opted to transfer to Queens Academy and Linden center for GED/TASC preparation, as an alternative. Students have come back and shared the wonderful things you have done for them as a counselor.

Ms. Garcia will always have an special place in my heart this lady was there for me to support me and help me during a very difficult time I endure while being a student at Liberty High School. When I was 17 I became pregnant with my son, at that point I didn’t know what to do or who to tell but Ms. Garcia was always there to guide me through everything I needed to do in order to become a young responsible parent. Many of my classmates didn’t have close family members being that we had just came from another country so it was very difficult and scary to find ourselves in another country in which the language we knew wasn’t the primary language, learning English was definitely a challenge but at Liberty High school I found someone I can always consider a mother and a very influential person in my life, Ms. Garcia.

    1. Garcia

Gracia, Thank you for your kind words of support. I remember as if it was yesterday when Derick was born and the doctor handed him over to me. The warmth of your baby was an amazing feeling and each time I recall the moment, the warm sensation I felt then is still the same after so many years. I was happy to see both of your children at your marriage celebration to your high school sweetheart, Jesus. I would love to have you all come over to visit at Liberty, before I retire.

It was my honor to have Ms.Garcia for my high school counselor. She always encouraged and believed in me when even I questioned myself. Ms.Garcia is more like a friend more than a counselor. She understands students’ lives and situations; has a close relationship and interacts with students all the time. I really want to appreciate everything she has done for students. Although I graduated from high school already, she always sends me updated information regarding CUNY and some other policies that she thinks I will need it, which helps my college life a lot!!!

  8. Garcia

Thank you Huan Chun! It’s always a pleasure to continue to assist you which ever way I can. You are so driven and I wish you much success in college and thereafter. Remember to be passionate and enjoy!

I was very fortunate to have Ms. Garcia as my mentor and colleague as I began my counseling career. She is very knowledgeable and her energy is contagious. Everything I have learned from her I would have never learned in my education to become a counselor. She is very tactful in the way she works with each student and supports them in their growth, both personally and academically. I would not be the counselor I am today if it were not for Ms. Garcia and I will be eternally grateful to her for sharing her wisdom with me.

How wonderful to be finally recognized for the selfless work that you have done for your entire career! Congratulations ! I worked with Inez while I was a teacher at Liberty for 12 years and saw first hand the love with which she did her job. She was always advocating for the students and handing out love and tough love when needed. There is no way to measure the positive impact that you have made and the countless lives you have affected but know that the world is a better place for many families because of you. Salud!

I remember as a kid my mom would get up at the crack of dawn, get my brother and myself ready for school and go to work – rain sleet or shine. A single mother raising two kids must have been challenging but she did it with style and grace. I know at times she struggled to put us through Catholic school and college but she made it look easy. We grew up in some rough areas of NYC but she always told us to use it as a stepping stone to where we want to live later on in life. She taught us the importance of having a strong work ethic, self-discipline, to have common courtesy and to always be righteous.

I have always admired her for going the extra mile not only at home but at Liberty High School as well. My mom would always go above and beyond for her students to make sure they graduated. It wasn’t even to be recognized or get a raise; it was because she genuinely cares for their well being. She has always been involved in her school’s extra curricular activities, staying late and even working on the weekends.

I can honestly say that there isn’t anyone I know who deserves such honor and recognition for their accomplishments. I’m very proud to be your son. I know I don’t say it enough but I love you mom!

What can I say that hasn’t been said about Ms. Garcia already! Ms. Garcia to her staff and student but “titi” to me and my family. For the past thirty-five years I’ve had the pleasure of being her niece and like for many of her students Ms. Garcia has influenced and guided me through tough love and countless pep talks. Ms. Garcia is the true definition of a role model to her students, her sons and to all of the members of our family! Her genuine love for higher education and interest in seeing her students succeed and further their education is why I know she is the most deserving person I can think of for such a recognition. Ms. Garcia is someone who leaves a mark in her students hearts. Her students often come back to visit years after they graduate to thank her for all that she did for them when they attended Liberty High School.

Inez Garcia has been a dedicated guidance counselor at Liberty High School for 32 years. That’s also how long she’s been my aunt. Her years of experience as a guidance counselor has earned her the patience and knowledge to offer advise to her students in many areas including academics and career achievement. As for me, organization and personal goal setting has been the biggest lessons she had shared. I’m so grateful to you Titi for sharing your life with me and my children. Congratulations on the recognition you are receiving for your work at Liberty High School. I’m so proud of you!

For 16 years as a teacher and 11 as a counselor I was a colleague and witness of Inez’s persistence and success in advocating for her students at the Liberty High School Academy for Newcomers. As a teacher I experienced how she frequently checked in on her students, sometimes sitting through classes to observe individual students’ behaviors. She always alerted me if there were students with special needs for whom I should be prepared. If I had a concern about any of her students, she was immediately on it, providing support for them while helping me to better understand their behaviors and how best to design my lesson plans for them. When I became a counselor, I modeled much of my approach on my observations of her practices. She was always open to sharing her expertise, her suggestions and opinions on any and all of my concerns and questions.
As a counselor I experienced daily how Inez cared deeply for her students. She helped them deal with their individual issues so that they could feel better about themselves and more capably manage and succeed in their studies; she was exceptional in identifying students with special needs and seeking out school and community resources to support these students; she was very focussed on career counseling for all of her students giving very meaningful guidance that prepared them well for life after high school; she ran an after school program as part of her concern for career counseling; she was always trying to engage with all of the students in more informal ways, including joining them for lunch in the cafeteria where she was invariably surrounded by students interested in conversing with her; these are only a few of Inez’s many contributions to her students, school and community.

    Oh Ms. Garcia …
How I love your personality.. you brighten the day with your smile. You are one of those people hard to forget. Your passion and hard work is greatly appreciated. Thank you for always caring and helping us when we needed you. Learning the language was so hard but you took your time and encouraged us to never give up. Now I’m the one trying to be patient with my students as they too learn the language 🙂 It was so great to see you on our reunion!!

Well, I came to this country nearly 16 years ago, not knowing what to expect. Liberty high school not only help me adapt to a whole new country but every single stuff member of that school deserve credit. Miss Garcia was always there to reach out or even listen to the students. Is not easy dealing with a bunch of know it all teenagers, but she was always professional and knew how to handle this group of immigrants that could’ve end up not graduating or move on to a brighter future. It takes a special kind of person to do what she does. Helping someone else and expect nothing on return.
